MS Phone7 on Samsung Focus

I told myself I should do the right thing for a man’s reputation, and not use only iPhone and Android. I should give Microsoft a chance too. So I got a Samsung Focus with Phone7 on it for testing. The conclusion: never again. Not in a million years.

In short, I bought it to synchronize the company’s exchange (also a Microsoft product). Contacts, email, calendar. I mean exactly what any other phone does with a 20 second setup. This phone doesn’t know how to do it!!! Or maybe it does, but randomly. I am writing this post after 2 (two!!!) hours of careful study of the problem. First, I got error 80072F0D without any explanation (I hate these coded errors! – it’s so easy with Apple when it just tells you “press here”). I went to look on the internet (of course I was in a place where access to the internet was complicated – that’s why I’d gotten a phone, duh!) and I found a million complaints and no coherent answer. All the people who were answering on behalf of MS on forums were saying that it meant you didn’t have a certificate on your phone and so it wouldn’t work. What exactly wouldn’t work? And why did it work for others? Then other people on forums said that even after they got the certificate it still didn’t work :-). Anyway, I deactivated the SSL and I went on.

Then error 80072EFD – which means I’m not connected to the internet. Wanna bet? Exploder works, hotmail works. Android syncs with maximum speed at a feet away. At one point it changed its mind and it told me 80072FA8. And then it went back to the first option. All the recommendations on the internet were to “Change the phone”. No, wait, there is another recommendation that goes like this:

  • Check all server settings of course — make sure remote syncing is enabled. 🙂
  • Setup the outlook sync while connected locally to the domain that you want to sync to — use all local settings as though you were setting up a PC to connect to the server.
  • Change the local server name to the internet accessible name once you leave the network.

That’s what I have to do to make it work??? Cool, it’s just that I’m 10,000 km away from “locally connected”.

Another nice thing is that you have to provide a hotmail account. OK, the same as with other software. It’s just that it instantly imported all MSN contacts in “people” and I haven’t been able to get rid of them since. So the alternatives are a) I delete the hotmail account on the phone and I don’t use applications, b) I make a fake hotmail account, c) I delete the contacts (and the phone tells me it’ll delete them from hotmail too…) or d) as I was saying above, I change the phone.

I’m speechless. The experience is so bad that I started writing instantly, although I’m not the kind of person to shed his frustrations on the internet. There might be solutions for all these problems and you might come and tell me “yes, if you did this and this, it would’ve worked”. I really urge you to tell me; it would solve a real and specific problem. The sad experience though will remain with me. If someone wants to buy a Samsung Focus with Phone7 on it, I’m selling it cheap.

Later edit: Now I remembered another thing: as soon as I inserted the card, it connected to the internet without my doing anything and it did things no one asked it to. On cellular data, though I was in a wireless area. Luckily someone warned me and I went straight to settings to deactivate cell data. It took me 20 seconds and 11 dollars. Damn!

Later edit 2: It worked eventually, with certificate. The frustrations I still have are: a) other phones work without it and b) the error management system is rubbish. I never thought I would see in this day and age “Error 80072efa” without telling me exactly what it is about and how to fix it.

Later edit 3: OK, the phone (hardware) is really cool. The system is usable. Not sensational, but it’s ok. The onscreen keyboard is better than with other phones (measured in number of typos per hundred characters, on P7 I don’t think I had 2-3 mistakes, while with Android and iPhone I have more than 10). It commits major blunders because it comes from Windows – it still has 3 confirmations for a deletion, stuff that I’d comfortably grown out of doing. The errors are encrypted (see above). I haven’t managed to convince it to automatically connect to a certain wireless network when it is in its range. I couldn’t manage to tether it (I don’t even know if it can…?). The buttons on the bottom light up *after* you press them (that’s really weird). I still find it hard to get used to the system in which the right side of the screen lets you see a bit of the next screen. A big plus is the preinstalled Office, with Notes and all. Oh, and I have to install Zune on my computer… Yuk, Zune???

Later edit 4 (and the last one): I’m not selling it anymore. It’s not the perfect phone and what I had hoped from MS, but it’s usable and often enjoyable.

Bad things: all the experience above + I can’t add a wireless network that doesn’t broadcast the SSID + (at least for me) the graphic interface of the home page gives me the creeps – it only has “neon” colors + the buttons on the bottom side light up only after you press them (in order to press you need to see them first, duh!) + I still can’t get used to the idea that on the right side I see a strip that represents 5 mm of the next page + it annoys me that the games are hidden somewhere behind a game place + the marketplace is complicated to use + I can’t get rid of “updates available” for apps + it has Microsoft “feedback”, not clearly defined, directly switched “on”, with “use cellular data” also switched on (you take data from my phone and money from my cell data contract without asking me…) + some other little things.

Good things: great screen, the look and feel and the very good usability of the phone (except the buttons on the bottom side) + a certain feeling of déjà-vu in the apps – it resembles windows, you often find things that are familiar and that you couldn’t find in other phones + Office is a big plus + the contacts synchronize *all* the fields with exchange, which doesn’t happen with other phones, where the fields with strange names don’t synchronize + better facebook integration than with Android (I don’t know about iPhone) and I suppose it’s the same with hotmail/live/msn/bing (whatever its name is).

I suppose there are many other good things, but if I didn’t need them in the first couple of days it means they are not important for me.

All in all, it’s nice – I am glad I got it. Phone8 might just be OK if MS decides not to play “catch-up” and comes with something new and good.

MS Phone 7 on Samsung Focus

1) Check all server settings of course — make sure remote syncing is enabled 🙂
2) setup the outlook sync while connected locally to the domain that you want to sync to — use all local settings as though you were setting up a PC to connect to the server
3) change the local server name to the internet accessible name once you leave the network.

Damn!

Iacs, Zune???

+ alte maruntisuri.

“It’s important to note that Windows Phone 7 (WP7) primarily was developed as a consumer device and not an enterprise device. As a result there of many of the enterprise oriented features we had in Windows Mobile 6.x aren’t available in WP7. However, now that WP7 is out, the Windows Phone 7 team can focus on improving WP7 further and they already do. In addition, since it’s now possible to push out updates via the new “Phone Update” feature, it doesn’t mean that you necessarily need to buy a new device or wait for the service provider to release a new build in order to benefit from features added after you got a WP7 device.”
Adica in traducere, e consumer, si am inteles ca vreti mai mult din enterprise si o sa fie in update viitoare 🙂
Si pina la urma, sincronizarea cu exchange va merge, e usor mai dificil de configurat, in secunda asta nu e chiar stil iau telefon de la magazin si gata sint in infrastructura firma. Sint in enterprise il iau de la IT configurat si merge :).
Dar in afara de sincronizarea mail, experienta telefon e ok?

Mai dă-i o șansă.

    Inca o sansa – vezi “later edit 4” 🙂
