Closing a chapter

Last night I was invited to the ZF Gala 2010 and I received a special prize for founding and selling ePayment. It’s an honor; thank you, everyone! I would like to make one comment: I don’t think the sale of the company is the one worthy of an award – I did that out of interest. But I think it’s amazing how a company managed to create in 6 years a completely new market out of nothing: in 2004 there were ZERO sales by using online payment, in 2010 sales amount to EUR 130m. About 90% of that sum is made by ePayment. There were big investments in money (and this is my merit, thank you!), in imagination and work (this is the merit of my colleagues at ePayment, congratulations!), in participating to the vision and in developing the market (the merit of online stores).

It was a question of marketing and market education, of convincing stores that without online payment there is no progress, that (even if sometimes the apparent costs are high) if we go in this direction, we’ll all move forward. It was a question of understanding banking models and working models in the banking system; of Corporate Governance the likes of which I think no Romanian company (other than banks) has; of technological efforts, efforts to develop all the tools stores need in order to sell and buyers need in order to feel comfortable when providing their card information on the internet; of an effort towards a vision, towards understanding where needs are heading on the medium term.

What emerged was a market that trusts putting card information on the internet. And rightly so, because ePayment (and you can no longer suspect I have an interest in promoting it 🙂 ) is really a guarantee today of the fact that online payments through them are secured, that stores will receive their money and buyers their merchandise. What came out was a platform that made it possible to implement online payments with two clicks in any store, a platform that not only does cash collection, but also significantly helps increase sales. The ePayment loyalty card, the Business School, alternative payments, the integration of marketing tools, reporting – and so many others. A platform that is enhanced with new facilities every day (BTW: hey, ePayment, I can’t wait for you to release something new and make waves again 🙂 ).

All in all, I’m proud of what ePayment built – financially and from the point of view of team, technology, market. I am proud I was a part of this endeavor. We are moving on now and, as I answer whenever someone asks me what’s with the red dot in the GECAD logo: a dot, like a full stop, represents the closure of a chapter and the beginning of a new one; for ePayment, for the other GECAD companies, for me.

.Thank you

Punct.
